Experience backcountry New Zealand at its best.
This adventure on the Upper Grey/Māwheranui is a relaxed three days rafting through lush green native beech forest and stunning gorges with a backdrop of rugged mountains.
"Lot's of time to relax and explore the area."
The first day of rafting gives us plenty of opportunity to practice our paddling skills. It is made up of really great rapids that flow through beautiful native beech forest. Our camp for the night is on the kanuka flats below the confluence with the Robinson River. Upon arriving at camp there is plenty of time to read, talk, swim or fish. This river is famous for its trout after all! A delicious dinner is cooked on an open campfire.
The second day begins with a hearty breakfast before we begin the second leg of our adventure. In the morning we raft through a wide-open valley with good views of Mt Rameses and other mountain tops in the area. After lunch, the hills tighten up and we tackle the rock garden section, a fun set of rapids with heaps of rocks to weave our way through, to the Island Camp. The slopes surrounding the area are covered in rich and varied shades of green. Moss, beech, and fern create a magical scene and we can not decide if it is more beautiful on a clear or misty day.
There is no better way to spend our third-day rafting than to float through the Gentle Annie Gorge. This spectacular steep walled canyon will take your breath away. Since the only way to access the gorge is via the Upper Grey River/Māwheranui you will be one of the lucky few who have experienced its beauty.
