As far as rafting trips are concerned this is as good as it gets, the karamea river is truly one the greats and the one day section really delivers! With majestic scenery, exceptional whitewater, and a stunning heli flight to the put on this really is the trip of a lifetime!
Starting our day in one of NZ's best kept secrets the remote town of Karamea we load up the "choppa" and take flight into what is probably the least explored corner of Kahurangi National Park. Landing at the edge of the Tasman wilderness Area we begin our trip with some comprehensive training from your professional river guides after which we push off from the shore and begin our ride through what can only be (and has been many times) described as some "real quality Whitewater".
It would be hard to design a river that progresses better than our one day trip starting out with fun bouncy rapids in the morning we slowly pick up the pace throughout the day building into some more challenging larger whitewater stopping every now and then to take in the scenery or spy on some of the many pairs of Whio and other native birds who inhabit this area. We eventually stop beside the Kakapo River the only major tributary on this section for a leisurely gourmet luch followed by a stunning sidehike to look at the cascading waterfalls tucked up this tight gorge. After lunch the River really picks up the pace with our biggest section of whitewater home to rapids aptly named things like Holy Shit and Scarecase this river keeps on giving all the way to the end. Often followed by a cold drink and some hot chips a one of Karamea's many quality establishments this trip truely is the Ultimate Day Out!
