Day 1
Lake Rotoiti, the source of the Kawatiri/Buller River, and its surrounding mountains make a stunning backdrop to the start of our three day adventure. We spend the day on grade two and three rapids before finishing the day with the famous Granity rapid.
Day 2
Day two is the gentlest day on the river, we float through some beautiful gorges, hit some fun grade two rapids and pass one of the main towns along the Kawatiri, Murchison. Some good waves push us through Osullivan’s rapid at the end of the day. The evening camp spot is beautiful and overlooks the Mauria confluence.
Day 3
Day three is full of fun. At the start of the day we check out Ariki falls and the Pink Granite Canyon, other highlights of the morning include Jet Boat and Whale Creek rapids. Once we are through the morning whitewater we float through the flat section in the Buller Gorge for a couple of hours before reaching the Earthquake section of the river. The rapids in the section were created by the Īnangahua Earthquake of 1968. A huge slip blocked the river threatening to flood the small town of Īnangahua Junction below. This did not eventuate but eventually the rollercoaster rapids which you will experience were created.
Our trip ends at the Iron Bridge, from here we travel back to Murchison for a hot shower and watch some photos of us on the big screen!
