It is no surprise that this is our most popular tour.
The Grey River/Māwheranui begins in the Southern Alps at Lake Cristobel, The river runs through native beech forests, steep gorges and farmland for 120 kilometres before meeting the Tasman Sea at Greymouth. On this full day trip we raft a stunning section of the Upper Grey River/Māwheranui called the Gentle Annie. Many parts of the tour are only accessible by boat so you will be one of the lucky few to experience the beauty of this area.
"An awesome day out for all ages."
The day begins with a 40 minute drive from Ikamatua. There is no doubting that you are on the West Coast as most of the drive is through native beech forest. Upon arriving at the river you will get changed into the rafting gear that we provide. A comprehensive safety briefing is given before we hit the water for an exciting adventure within spectacular West Coast landscapes.
No previous experience is required as our guides will teach you all you need to know.
The first few minutes on the river are very calm so it’s a good time to get used to being in a raft with a paddle in hand. Once we turn the corner out of the wide valley the hills tighten up. The steep slopes surrounding the area are covered in rich and varied shades of green. Moss, beech, fern and a backdrop of towering mountains create a magical scene. We cannot decide if it is more beautiful on a clear or misty day.
After floating past the towering waterfall that we have nicknamed ‘the Lady of the Grey’ we begin the rock garden section. We start to meet the biggest waves and rocks of the Upper Grey/Māwheranui which include the rapids Double Rock and Annie’s waves.
Annie’s waves take us on a fun-filled gentle roller coaster all the way to lunch.
After refuelling our tanks with a picnic we hop back into the rafts for an exciting afternoon. Following some more entertaining rapids we enter the Gentle Annie Gorge. This spectacular steep walled canyon will take your breath away. It is an amazing way to end our trip. On a hot day you have the choice of sliding out of the raft into the river and floating through the gorge on your back. You are welcome to stay in the raft the whole way if you choose!
After an exhilerating day on the river we get changed into our dry clothes and drive 20 minutes back to Ikamatua, arriving at approximately 4pm. There is time for any onward travel you may have planned.
This trip is an awesome wee gem that is hidden away in backcountry New Zealand. Come on an adventure with us and experience its beauty for yourself!
