Your information

Privacy Policy

Inland Adventures collects personal information so we can run safe trips and look after the people on them. We handle that information under the Privacy Act 2020 and its thirteen information privacy principles. This page explains what we collect, why, who sees it, and what you can do about it.

Short version: we collect what a river guide needs to keep you safe and get you on the water, we do not sell it, and you can ask to see it or correct it at any time.

What We Collect

  • Contact details Name, email, phone, postal address
  • Trip details Trip and date, group size, ages of participants, pick-up point
  • Safety information Medical conditions, medications, allergies, swimming ability, next of kin or emergency contact
  • Dietary requirements For catered and multi-day trips
  • Payment details Billing information needed to take and refund payment
  • Website information Standard server logs and basic analytics about how the site is used

We collect this information from you directly, usually through the enquiry and booking form or in conversation before a trip. Some of it - medical and emergency-contact details in particular - we have to ask for; without it we cannot safely take you on the river.

Why We Collect It

We use your information to answer your enquiry, confirm and run your booking, plan transport and catering, brief guides on anything that affects safety, respond to an incident, take payment and issue refunds, and meet our obligations under the Adventure Activities Regulations. We also use it to send you information about your own trip.

We only send marketing or newsletters if you have asked for them, and every message includes a way to unsubscribe.

Who Sees It

Your information is shared only with the people who need it to run your trip:

  • Our guides and staff working on your trip.
  • Emergency services, medical staff, or search and rescue, if there is an incident.
  • Service providers who help us operate - payment processing, website hosting, email, and transport operators where a trip involves them.
  • Our safety auditor or a regulator, where an audit or investigation requires it.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. Some of our service providers store data on servers outside New Zealand; where that happens we take reasonable steps to ensure comparable privacy safeguards apply, as the Privacy Act requires.

Photos and Video

Guides sometimes take photos on the river, and we may use them to promote our trips. Tell us if you would rather not appear, and we will keep you out of anything we publish. If a photo of you is already online and you want it removed, ask us and we will remove it.

How We Keep It Safe

Information is held in secure systems with access limited to the people who need it. Paper forms carried on trips are kept with the trip leader and stored securely afterwards. If a privacy breach occurs that is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, as the Privacy Act requires.

How Long We Keep It

We keep booking and safety records for as long as we need them for the purpose they were collected and for any period required by law - including incident and safety records under our adventure-activity obligations. After that, information is securely deleted or destroyed.

Your Rights

You have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to get a copy of it, and to ask us to correct anything that is wrong. We will respond as soon as we can and within 20 working days. There is normally no charge.

To make a request, or to ask anything about how we handle your information, get in touch.

Cookies and This Website

Our website uses cookies to keep the site working and to understand in general terms how it is used. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; parts of the site may not work as well if you do.

If You Are Not Happy

If you think we have mishandled your information, tell us first - we would like the chance to put it right. If you are still not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner at privacy.org.nz.
